The Winner of The Hot 100

Just over 100 days ago we began a challenge to motivate and inspire us all to end 2009 with a bang!  I can’t tell you how proud I am of everyone who participated and finished The Hot 100.  Unfortunately, there can only be one winner.  As I said originally, the winner was chosen randomly from a list of all those who completed the challenge.  Without any more delay, the winner is Angie Palin.  Angie, if you will shoot me an email via the Contact Page with your home address I will get your peppers out to you.  I think you are going to be very pleased.  To quote a friend of mine, “this is the best pepper product I have ever had!”  By the way, if I don’t hear from Angie by Friday, I will award the peppers to the next person on the list.  Of course, I have no doubt Angie will contact me.  Be sure and congratulate Angie on her win!  Oh, and here is a picture of the jar of her peppers!

If you didn’t get in on The Hot 100, don’t worry, there is still time to join TThe Perfect 10.  Time is running out though – you need to get on this NOW!  Really, you don’t want to miss out on this.

Speaking of contests, I recently won a book over on Shannon’s site, The Fabulous Fattie.  The book is Believe It, Be It, by Ali Vincent, a previous winner of The Biggest Loser.  I cannot wait to read it.  Thanks Shannon!

Everything is still on plan for The Perfect 10.  I did push ups, planks, and Tabata Jacks this morning.  I was planning on Tabata Squats, but I just didn’t have the leg strength yet.  That is for tomorrow.  I also did another short session of Intu-Flow.  Tomorrow I will be doing a longer session of this as well.

Do you have a workout partner?  While my wife occasionally joins me, most of the time I am alone.  That is unfortunate because a recent study found that Exercise Groups Provides Strength in Numbers.  I don’t know about you, but I think we get some of that through our blogging.  It is not the same, but yet every little bit helps.

  3. Congrats Angie! and congrats Steve on winning the book!

When I go to the gym I am usually alone…but I do have a dear friend who is also trying to lose weight. She and I have gotten together a few times to walk and plan on doing it more often. I like walking with a partner, but hate feeling like I’m slowing her/him down or vice versa.

I agree with your thoughts Josie. My wife tends to walk much slower than I do. I try to think of it as good time together though.

  4. Congrats to Angie!

I mostly am a solo workout person so that I can be most efficient with my time. The exceptions are my long bike rides with John on weekends (in summer), where the destination is more important than the calorie burn.

My last attempted run with John ended up with me feeling upset at my perceived slowness, so that is not something I am going to repeat very soon LOL!

This, like most things, should be taken with a grain of salt. Obviously what you are doing works. I think the same can be said for me too.

  6. Yay! Congrats to Angie.

I have a walking buddy. We walk our kids to school in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. Makes for 80 manditory minutes 5 days a week that I can’t talk myself out of anymore. Woohoo for walking buddies!

That is great Christine. It not only gets you exercise, but it gets the kiddos exercise too.

  7. Congrats Angie!

Since my husband doesn’t go back to school until next Monday he and I are going to the gym every day this week together. I also might meet my friend once a week on the base to workout.

I like workout partners, but I have to say that I really like the blogging friends I’m making. They give me someplace to come back and tell all I did and that’s just as motivating to me. :)

Oh, I have two long-distance friends who workout regularly and I keep in touch with them about my working out, so we keep each other on track. They are my little groupies and pillars I lean on when needed during my weight loss journey.

    I’ve said too much…sorry. :) G’nite!

You didn’t say too much at all. I agree about the blogging buddies. My blog has been my accountability.

  8. Whoohoo, congratulations to Angie! And thanks for posting a photo, Steve, it’s great to see that jar in all its splendour. =)

I would also love an exercise partner, and perhaps one day that will happen, who knows, but I agree that the blogging world helps. The community you have created here, Steve, and the accountability, this serves a very similar function. When I don’t feel like burning my way through a workout, it helps to remember that I have friends cheering me on, and friends whose triumphs I share. This encouraging presence is often at the back of my mind, and that is so good! I’m grateful.

Pippa, I wish I had taken a little more time with it and made a better photo, but that one will do.

I am also grateful for the community here. It is nice to have a plethora of others who are going through the same fight, who understand the struggles, yet keep me accountable.

  9. Congrats on the win! What a lushious pepper jar :)

With me, if I’m working in a stressful job, I like the quiet contemplation of walking alone, but now with the two doggies, its always a group endeavor. lol

    Come on you pefect teners!

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

That is part of what I have liked about walking too. It gives me time to decompress. I don’t get that much elsewhere.

    Woot for The Perfect Teners!

  10. I used to train with my Fiance before I got a PT and when we trained together it was awesome. Also my journey started on something called “Healthy Weight Programme” Which is an 8 or 16 week programme at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa and there it was a group thing. Trained together, weighed together, etc.

    South Beach Steve Reply:

I have wondered about the trainer myself. The program at the SSI sounds interesting.

  11. Congrats to Angie!!! Good for her!

Steve, how about a video of you doing those Tabata squats or jacks? :-)

I like working out alone.. that is just me & after so many years, I can motivate myself. I know this is not the way for most but I love just doing my own thing, doing what feels right for me & not having to worry about what a partner might want to do PLUS I love that gym when very few are there & I can do what I want & stay on the cardio machine without being kicked off cause somebody is waiting for it & I am limited to 20 minutes.. can you say a selfish workout person! :-) That is me!

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Jody, I have done a Tabata Jacks video before. I’ll have to look up the link to it. They were weak though (in form).

  12. I dont really have a workout buddy of sorts. I have various girlfriends that I will go for a walk with on the weekends, but I am one of those people that really does prefer my excercise be individual. I like my walks/jogs on the treadmill where it’s my time. I like my walks outside with my headphones and zoning out to the music and not having to keep up with a conversation. Excercise classes, while I wish I enjoyed them, I’ve always hated them lol.

  13. Congrats to Angie (she says begrudgingly). How about a jar of peppers as a consolation prize for the Perfect 10 Steve?

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Sorry Helen! Perhaps I can give a jar of peppers to the runner up of the Perfect 10 – let me give that some thought.

  14. I’m usually working out alone. Even if I take walks outside with dog, I can’t get Ron to come with me. One day soon I hope!

My new hot yoga classes are filled with 20+ people but I’m still alone as you focus only on yourself and there is absolutely no socializing (until after the class).

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

I have never taken yoga, so I didn’t realize how alone it sounds.

  15. I definitely get that with this community. While I sometimes have people in the gym with me at work, I don’t usually coordinate timing with them. But I think some kind of accountability and encouragement is very important.

    Great job on the workout.

And again, thanks for coordinating this contest. I’m off to go congratulate Angie right now…

  19. The peppers look hot!

I prefer to work out with a buddy as I give up easier on my own.
Saying that… Jonny has just gone off swimming without me because I had to stay home and work :( Was sent home at 10.30am because the snow was so bad where I was…

    South Beach Steve Reply:

They aren’t too bad Louisa, although you have to understand I love it HOT!

We are supposed to get snow tomorrow. I guess I will probably try to work from home on Thursday.

I don’t like hot things but I’m definitely improving slowly as I get older!

I was at home again today. Might have to go in again tomorrow which might be for the best – I get so distracted here and have little to show for my time! :p

    South Beach Steve Reply:

I may be at home tomorrow. We are supposed to get snow tonight. I am more effective at the office too.

  20. Congratulations Angie! Peppers cannot be too hot or spicy for me – I love them!

I tend to workout at home on my own, as I’m very self-conscious If I go to the gym, however, it’s nice to have someone there to (metaphorically!) hold my hand as I had agoraphobia for years and get anxious in crowded places when I’m very big.! This was definitely size-related as I have no problem going anywhere or doing what I want when I’m a lot slimmer. Looking forward to being that person again later this year! :)

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Me too Patsy – the hotter the better.

It is interesting to hear about agoraphobia (had never heard that term that I know of). It won’t be long until you won’t have to worry about that again.

  21. You are very welcome! Thanks for all of your support. Congratulations to Angie :)
I do not have a workout partner but I am signing up rotten#3 tonight at the gym so we can go together. He is a fit little man and we have fun.
I agree bloging etc does give you a sense of having a partner. At least people you can relate to and share your experience with.

If you’re into non medical alternatives, one of the Drs I worked with years ago told me that Fish Oil will drop Blood Pressure by 10 points. He also said that magnesium can. Good luck getting it down.

Thanks for all your fun comments on my blog.

    South Beach Steve Reply:

It is interesting that you bring this up outdoor.mom. My 10 point spike occurred at the same time I stopped taking my fish oil pills for a few days. I started back today, so it will be interesting seeing if it goes right back down.
