Motivation For Monday – Breaking Free From the Funk

Before I get to the video today, I have had a few people ask lately if they could share these videos on their blog.  I don’t mind that a bit.  I would prefer that you only link back to my blog on the current week’s videos, but if you want to embed the others, that would be awesome.  Of course, I would always appreciate a link back to my blog.  If you want to see the full list of the vlog posts I have done, you can see them at my YouTube channel.  Now on to today’s vlog post:

By the way, Rachel seems to have broken free from her exercise funk over the weekend.  Congratulations to her.  Now I just need to join her!

  1. I literally started crying as I watched that. I just left the gym ver discouraged because I let the people around me get to me. They were all going so fast…so strong. I started doubting myself and wondering what I got myself into…And asking can I really do this? So, I really needed that motivation today. I WILL NOT QUIT. So Thank You Steve!!!! And I loved the ‘screamsters’ in the background

Josie, comments like this make doing the video posts all worth it. This is exactly why I do them. Thank you!

I wondered who would comment first about the screamsters. :-)

Yeah, I was all pumped to do my workout and then I got in there and it seemed like everyone around me was just going so fast on the treadmill….the guy on my left was running at 5 mph and the gal on my left was was doing 4 mph and a 10 incline…and there were like 3 people behind me who’d been on the ellipticals for forever. I let it get the best of me and I stopped at 1.6 miles…got in my car and watched your video from my phone and just started bawling. LOL. It was precisely what I needed to hear in that moment. I know you are busy and have a lot on your plate, but please don’t stop posting them.

Josie, it is hard for us not to let that happen to us. We have to remember that this isn’t a race against anyone else. It is just a race against ourselves. I am so glad this spoke to you.

  2. Steve – you have the passion of a preacher! You are right – it doesn’t matter what is causing the funk, what matters is your reaction to it.

You will get through your injuries. And as you do you will get stronger mentally.

Diane, it amazes me how many people have made a similar comment. I wonder if God is trying to tell me something?

Thanks, as always, for your encouragement and wisdom Diane.

  3. Thanks so much Steve. I have an injured left knee that I thought was improving (and is, I guess); BUT yesterday I went for a walk (great pics on my blog:) ) and today my knee is really stiff and hurting. Yesterday it felt almost normal. Very discouraging, and I was getting all funky about it until I listened to your vlog. Excellent, dead on, and exactly what I needed to hear. Again – I love your sourthern accent!

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Leslie, I am glad this spoke to you, southern accent and all! :-) Take care of your knee, you don’t want a small injury to turn into a big one.

  5. I feel like you were talking directly to me, Steve. As you know, I’ve had both a funk and a sickness recently and they’ve really made a dent in my progress. This video has helped.

I am worth it. I will not quit. I will not fail.

That’s now on a post-it on my monitor so it won’t soon slip my mind. I think I’ll make a second copy for the refrigerator.

    Thanks!

  6. Hey Steve,

Sorry to hear about your grandmother and the injuries you’ve had to contend with. Also, you mentioned several times some computer problems at work. Pretty stressful times for you — glad to see you pushing through.

You’ve got so much grit. Wish I had as much of my own. But I borrow yours a lot, so I guess it works out! Am sure you’re going to find your way through this and come out stronger on the other side.
    Best,
    Ish

Ish, alot has been going on lately, that is for sure. It sure seems that when it rains, it pours. Thanks for the comment.

Oh, and feel free to borrow the grit any time you need it.

  7. I could only watch half of this video as it keeps freezing on my computer, but I got the gist of it. I’m not in a ‘funk’, but I DO have tendonitis in both forearms that’s make some of my weightlifting tricky/painful… At the moment I’m taking painkillers/ibuprofen but I’m gutted to think it may impact on my workouts more than it’s doing already… At the moment I’m not lifting to the extent of my ability. Luckily, my lower half needs the most work and squats/lunges with dumbbells doesn’t affect it! :)

Hope everyone who is in a funk get out of it SOON!

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Patsy, I hate it that the video was freezing on you. That has happened to me when I was viewing other videos, but I haven’t noticed it with mine yet. I hope you get to view it later.

    Thanks for the comment.

  8. I AM WORTH IT! I WILL NOT QUIT! I WILL NOT FAIL!

AMEN! Wow , steve thanks buddy!

i really needed the direct motivation you provided in your promise to chastise me if i didnt snap to.

i wanted to tell you, after only two 30min. jogs, and two 30min walks, im already feeling the puff leave. especially in my legs/tush. that exercise is a real water drainer. (im also drinking my water again, yes, id stopped that too)

ive learned to NEVER take my habits for granted. to go from a happy drilling/jogging/walker, to not even wanting to walk my dogs was a real eye opener regarding the ease that our habits can fade away, almost like we never had them. very good post!

    South Beach Steve Reply:

I can almost hear you saying this Rachel!

You speak a lot of truth. We can NEVER take these habits for granted.

  10. We are all worth it! No quitting, no matter what.

Funks happen, and you are right in that it is all about your individual reaction to it.

  14. Jonny has hurt his knee so we don’t go running at all anymore but we do go swimming. We went this evening actually but were a bit late to the session. He does more lengths than me but I make every stroke count as I’ve got to get out earlier to wash my hair! I’ve been in a bit of a rut because it’s been hard as I started a new job and Jonny has been putting in 12 hour days at the office but it should all be back to normal. Does your wife work out with you much Steve?

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Louisa, it sure seems like when life changes (i.e., new job), it takes a toll on our routines. I can totally understand the issues with the long hours too. That is certainly how my life has been lately. Thankfully, mine is almost back to normal too.

My wife doesn’t work out with me a lot, but she does walk with me sometimes, probably 20% of the time. I wish she would come with me more, but it is hard for her to get up as early as I get up.

The best to you. I hope you get out of the rut and back in the groove soon.

  15. Motivating and frightening all at the same time. I am guessing you know the screamers…you weren’t distracted in the least.

Glad to hear grandma received a diagnosis. Best wishes!

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Yes, the screamers were my youngest son and his friend from up the road. They had a ball trying to interrupt the video. :-)

  16. Steve, I love your passion. Seriously, this video is exactly what I need to watch right now. Thank you.

Mary, I am so glad to read this. I think there are a lot of us that need this right now.

  17. I was so tired to night, I almost didnt watch this, figuring I would catch up later…glad I did…I was amused by the screamsters…and your ability to keep going despite them being behind you like that…and I was greatly encouraged. You know I feel like I have been in a funk!

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

The screamsters both got a big kick out of it. As I think I have said on here before, my videos usually take a few takes to get them right. They were beginning to get frustrated with that, but they liked it in the end.

I am glad to read the video encouraged you. You are really going through a lot of changes right now, all for the good, but changes nonetheless. You have to pull out of the funk though and find your new footing. I have no doubt you will do it though. No doubt at all.

  18. Brother Steve I wish that you would at least look into becoming a pastor and yes listen to God as well, sometimes we have to listen real carefully or we wont hear him, right.Great monday motivation as usual youve helped and touched many people out there who really needed it.Its not an accident that you have a god given gift.

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

VAngel, you are right, if we aren’t really quiet, it is hard to hear what God is saying. I do feel He is calling me for something, but I cannot put my finger on it yet. I have never felt the calling to be a pastor, but that isn’t to say He won’t call me there.

Right now it is nice knowing that lives are being touched through this blog. So many people need that encouraging word right now. I hope I am helping to fill that void.

  19. Does your son in the video look like you or your wife?Haha, just a ribbing for ya.

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

VAngel, I would say he looks like my wife. :-) However, if I said that, I might begin to look like him in this video. :-)

  20. Finally at work (high speed) and a chance to check out the video – I love the kids and the fact that they lighten you up for a brief moment in there.

You are touching so many people Steve – and it is a privilege you are wearing well. Fantastic work!

Glad to hear that foot is healing as well. You’ll be back to full hoofing it soon!

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Wendy, you will enjoy tomorrow’s video. I took your advice.

I truly hope I am touching people. I feel like I am, but I always wonder if I am looking at the world through rose colored glasses.

BTW, the foot is much better this evening.
