The Hot 100 – Going Out With a Bang!

Today’s the day folks, the day The Hot 100 – Going Out With a Bang! contest begins.  If you haven’t watched the introduction video from Motivation for Monday yet, do that first.  The rules are all given there. Next, you need to be sure you have seen Wednesday’s Word of the Day on goals.

While there are some more details on the Motivation for Monday post, the basics are this:

  1. You have to come up with some goals.
  2. You have to publish those goals.
  3. You have to give a status follow-up on those goals at least every ten days.

It’s easy folks, but be sure you read Motivation for Monday‘s post so you know more than the basics.  Be sure you tell your buddies about this.  As I said earlier today, it is fun to succeed, but it is more fun if you bring others along with you.

I have had a few questions on this:

  • First of all, do you have to post your goals here? No, but if you want to be sure you are in the running for the peppers, you have to comment on this post (see question number three below) and the update posts.  I might catch your goals without commenting, but it never hurts to be sure.  Feel free to save the details for your blog though.
  • Second, if you blow one of your goals, are you out of the running? No.  There will be some people who don’t like this rule, but this is more about accountability, motivation, and striving to do our best.  My thoughts are that if you are no longer trying, you will get sick of providing updates.  However, if you blow it one day, don’t fret.  Just get back in the swing of things, admit your mistake, and go on.  No promises here, but there may also be a prize for a randomly selected person who completes all their goals – perhaps another jar of peppers.  I’ll have to check the stock and see how much we have.  More on this later.  Just strive to achieve all the goals you have set.
  • Third, do I have to comment on this post letting you know I have started if I already commented on Monday’s post? No.  Of course I would welcome the comments here too, but if you have already left a comment on Monday’s post saying you are in, then you are in.  The same goes for those who may leave a comment on today’s Wednesday’s Word of the Day.

Now, drop me a comment here and let me know your in on this.  I’ll be posting my goals later this evening.  I’ll also post reminders every ten days just to be sure a check in date doesn’t slip by.  If you don’t have a blog, don’t worry.  You can post your goals right here in the comments.  If you have goals you don’t wish to share, that’s cool too, just list some of those you can share, and keep the others to yourself.  Don’t forget, today is day one, not tomorrow.  Don’t let this day sneak up on you!  This is all about making the last 100 days of 2009 the best, and hitting the first of 2010 with momentum!

BTW, be sure you are telling all your weight loss buddies about this!  Let’s all make this the best year end we have ever had!

Another question has been posed.  Am I giving a jar of smoked peppers to all who complete this? That is not the plan.  I intend on drawing one name from the list of all who successfully complete this; however, if it ends up being a small number that actually go through with it, and my pepper stock is sufficient, I may just send a jar to all.  Don’t depend on that though.

Challenge Update: Okay, I have made an executive decision on The Hot 100 – Going Out With a Bang! challenge.  Because I have had numerous people who have asked to join the challenge today, I am making a slight alteration to the challenge.  If you enter before 11:59 PM Central Time (UTC -5) Monday, September 28th you are eligible for the challenge.  Now, I also believe in being fair to those who entered by the end of the 23rd, as was originally stated.  So if someone wins who entered between the 24th and the 28th, then I will also give a jar of smoked, pickled jalapenos to the first person picked by random number generator who entered by the 23rd, meaning I will be out two jars of jalapenos.  If the first person drawn by random number was entered on the 23rd, they will get the only jar awarded.  I am not big on changing the rules after the competition has begun, but lets face it, this is all about getting healthier, right?  I think the compromise I have made is fair to all.  After the 28th, no new participants will be allowed.  If you are displeased with this, feel free to vent away in the comments, just realize the only person who is out anything here is me, so if I choose to give away a second jar, that is my prerogative.  Now, get out there and let others know about this so we can all make this a great last 100 99 days (and counting)!

  1. Steve – you are so great! I’m going too put a link at the bottom of my today’s post reminding people about this contest!

I still am in shock that there are only 100 days left in the year.

  3. Oops… forgot to give you one of my goals!

-Run an average of 40 miles a week (by the end of the year): I know this is attainable because I am averaging 25 right now, and if I had in just 1-2 miles a week it’ll happen.

  6. I made monthly goals, both on the scale and emotionally. The emotional ones are necessarily measureable, but they kind of go along with my scale goals.

Here’s the link to my blog for anyone who’s interested in reading it:
    http://leahs-new-ending.blogspot.com/2009/09/hot-100-day-1.html

October: See any loss on the scale by the time my MIL leaves (she’ll have been with us for about 6 weeks by the end of October.
November: Reach my first weight-loss goal of 199 by Thanksgiving.
December: Lose 5 pounds during this month of baking, holiday treats and fun. I will bake, so I will also limit my intake to almost nothing to make this goal happen.

I hope these aren’t too general, Steve. If they are, let me know and I’ll change them up a bit.

Thanks again and here we go!

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

I think they are great goals Leah. The emotional ones are still important; however, it is good to have the measurable ones to keep you motivated. No need to change them up, they are good!

  7. Steve–I am so in! I will fine-tune these goals before I post them on my blog, but they will be something along the lines of:

    1. get at least 30 minutes of intentional exercise daily
    2. wear my bodybugg daily and use it to meet my daily burn goal
    3. log every bite I eat–even if it would be embarrassing for someone else to read it–working towards an improved diet and a daily calorie intake goal
    4. get adequate sleep every night
    5. increase my water consumption

    Thanks!

  21. Brilliant, Steve. Simply brilliant! I’m definitely in. Here are my goals (more specifics on my site!):

    - Keep running!
    - Lose some more weight!
    - Eat out less – cook more!

    100 days… wow.

    South Beach Steve Reply:

Great Kimberly! Now heading to your site to check out the specifics.

  22. This is a great challenge Steve.

    1. Walk for 15 minutes every day. Note to self, this means you HAVE to get up from your desk and leave your office or leave the comfort of your home.

    2. Meditate every day.

    3. Take the focus off food on my birthday.

    My reasons:

    1. I haven’t started exercising regularly since I started my weight loss and I have a gym four floors down. Today was the start of moving consistently.

    2. I have a very stressful job and stress takes over my body. I have to control it and meditating works for me.

    3. Every year my birthday goes on for weeks and even months. My BF and I usually go to a few places for my free birthday meal, go out on the actual day (usually three meals out), my team takes me out, my friends and colleagues take me out and my family takes me out. WHAT??? That is a lot of food.

This year I will go out for ONE meal with my BF on the actual day of my BD. Someone else on my team has a BD in November so we are going to have a food day at work instead of going out. I am not going to go out for any other lunches or dinners. If someone insists I am going to ask them to make a donation to one of our local food banks instead.

Those are my goals in black and white.

    South Beach Steve Reply:

    [Reply]

    a_healthier_me Reply:

I have a BodyBugg, and they are great. They take all the guess work out. The Bugg tracks how many calories you burn (you don’t have to try and figure out what your effort level really was, and how many calories your body really burns on a particilar exercise, it does it all for you). Then you log in your food & it tells you how many calories you ate compared to how many you lost. You know if you’re doing enough to stay on track.

    [Reply]

    South Beach Steve Reply:

a_healthier_me, you are pushing me closer and closer to getting one. I love gadgets, so I am sure this would be no exception.

Great goals! 750 miles – wow, that is an awesome goal! It sounds as if you are very aware of what you are doing. You have already come so far. The best of luck to you!

Great sweettfp! The goals look good, although you might try to attach a limit to the soft drinks. Glad you decided to join us!

  44. Thanks Steve,

I am in. I have three types of goals health, financial and clutter. For your site, I am just going to list the health ones. But because of you, I will also be working on the other two from now to the end of the year.

    1. Use the Wii games that I purchased specifically for exercise–every other day.
    2. Get in 64 oz of water (I am at 0 again, so easy to fall back into old habits).
    3. Get back to the SB basics, not phase 1, but phase 1.5.
    4. Log food–I have never done this but I think I need to use it to keep better control of what I am doing.
    5. Planning, Planning, Planning–I do best on the SB when I plan, of course I do worse when I fly by the seat of my pants. The seat is pretty worn out from being used so much.

Thanks for the challenge. Best wishes to all for getting closer to your goals.

Becky, I am glad you decided to join in. Great goals, especially number one. By the way, it is nice to see another person on the beach here. :-)

Well I started out good with the goals but I have hit a snag with a strained muscle. Needless to say this puts exercise on the back burner for now. It took 30 minutes to get out of bed the other morning, maybe that should count as exercise(lol). It is feeling better, but not 100%. I logged well until the muscle took me out. I will get back to that tomorrow, and I am hoping that I will not need to rely on someone else when it comes to eating. My idea of appropriate food and their idea is not always the same.

Becky, I know right where you are coming from on this one. I have had a couple of injuries over the last year or so and they can sure put your exercise program on hold. Take care of the strained muscle and let it heal right. You’ll be back at it before too long.

    becky Reply:

Well, I had hoped to be in a better place by now but alas I am not. I have used my strain muscle as an excuse not to do anything that I am supposed to be doing. You would think that by this point I would know better but it seems that the years of bad habits are very quick to return when they see an opening. So for this week, I am going to work on water and logging. I find that when I am eating poorly, I do not log at all. Perhaps if I log no matter what, it will help with making better choices. I also need to work on the all or nothing mentality that has snuck back in. I know that every one makes mistakes but well….

You gotta take care of strained muscles though. If you don’t, you really end up regretting it.

You are right though, bad habits are quick to return. You have to do what you can all the time. If you can’t exercise, you have to make good food choices. You can do it. Yes, we all make mistakes, me included. Just remember, you CAN do this.
