Motivation for Monday

Per Pippa’s very flattering comment, I decided to make my Toastmaster’s speech this week’s Motivation for Monday.  Be sure to adjust your sound.  Enjoy.

Day 261 – Another Great Day

I am pleased to report another great day on the diet today.  Once again, I was able to resist the temptations.  This has given somewhat of a feeling of empowerment today, something I haven’t had in a while.  My coworkers at this location all but begged me to head over to this great hamburger shop today, one that I really, really like, but I told them to go on their own.  They ended up heading over to a little Greek restaurant with me instead, which I think everyone enjoyed.  Tonight I ate at a Spanish restaurant that I also really enjoy, but was able to find a suitable meal in suitable portions.

My South Beach Diet meal journal for the day is as follows:

  • One cup of Uncle Sam cereal with a cup of skim milk.
  • Mid-morning snack – nothing.
  • Lunch – A Greek salad and a skewer of grilled pork.  I also had a bite of the bread that was about the size of a quarter.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – Nothing.
  • Supper – An appetizer of grilled, seasoned pork, a main dish of chicken breast and a side of sauteed spinach.  Very, very tasty.  I did leave feeling a little hungry though.  The appetizer and the main dish together were smaller than I typically eat.
  • Mid-evening snack – about 1.5 cups of popcorn, an apple and two handfuls of roasted almonds.

I am also pleased to report that I think I am finally getting over this bronchitis.  I am still coughing just a little, but my chest feels a lot looser, so I think I have it whipped now.  I am ready to do some good yard work this weekend, so I hope it is gone.

Day 260 – Past the First Day of Temptation

I had a great day today considering the temptation that I faced.  As I wrote about a few days ago, I am working in Charlotte, NC this week, where the food is always a problem for me.  Tonight the management at the office I am working at took my team out for dinner.  It was fabulous!  I did really, really well though.  The only thing I am unhappy with is that I ate some onion rings, only three though.  My South Beach Diet meal journal for the day is as follows:

  • Breakfast – One cup of steel cut oats with strawberries and flax seed.
  • Mid-morning snack – One lf cheese stick
  • Lunch – A Fuji Apple Salad at Panera Bread.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – One lf cheese stick
  • Supper – Three or Four chicken wings, a Ribeye, steamed green beans, a BLT salad, and three onion rings.  I also had two bourbons and diet coke and a small glass of red wine.

Overall, I think it was a successful day.  The temptation here is great, and I am sure this is not the last meal for which I will have to be strong.  The desserts and other appetizers really tempted me tonight, but they are not nearly as appealing as being skinny.

One last thing, I haven’t been to this office in almost a year, so I am considerably smaller than the last time I was here.  Several people noticed and commented today, which is always nice.

Tomorrow I am looking forward to a great cup of coffee at Dilworth’s.  I have never been to a Dilworth’s yet, but I understand it is about as good as it gets for restaurant coffee.

Week Thirty-Eight Weigh-In and Measurements

I have gotten what I deserved for a less than stellar week on the diet.  My weight this week increased 1.5 pounds to 230 and my body fat percentage went up 0.8% to 26.6%.  Of course, that also means my BMI went up.  It is now 33.0.  My chest is the last measurement that increased.  It is up an eighth of an inch to 48.375″.

My neck, stomach, and thighs all stayed the same this week.

My waist and forearms each decreased by an eighth of an inch: 40.125″ and 12.875″ respectively.  My calves went down 1/4″ to 17″ and my biceps decreased 3/4″ (something seems off here) to 13.25″.

This is definitely not the week I was looking for.  I am going to have a better week next week.  That means absolutely no Grape Nuts!  That is easy to say when I will be out of town.  I am going to behave myself as the restaurants that I go to while traveling this week and I am not going to visit that great hamburger joint that I love to frequent when I am in Charlotte.

Day 258

Yesterday was not a good day on the diet.  I grazed almost all day long.  The foods were all decent food choices, but just too much.  My South Beach Diet meal journal for the day is as follows:

  • Breakfast –  One cup of steel cut oats mixed with a tablespoon of butter, a tablespoon of flax seed, and 1/3 cup of strawberries.
  • Mid-morning snack – One cup of Grape Nuts and a cup of 2% milk.
  • Lunch – Two slices of grilled ham, white beans, and boiled cabbage.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – One cup of Grape Nuts and a cup of 2% milk.
  • Supper – A large portion of baked chicken and a large portion of steamed broccoli.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – You guessed it – one cup of Grape Nuts and a cup of 2% milk.

Days 256 & 257 – Busy, Busy, Busy

The last couple of days have been so hectic.  I probably could have gotten on here last night and made a post, but to tell you the truth, I was ready for bed.  My meals the last couple of days have been very similar.  My South Beach Diet meal journal for both days is as follows:

  • Breakfast – One cup of steel cut oats, one third a cup of frozen strawberrries, one and a half tablespoons of flax seed, a tablespoon of real butter, and a tablespoon of Splenda.  Man this is so good!
  • Mid-morning Snack – One lf cheese stick (actually, on day 256 I think I had two).
  • Lunch – One bowl of homemade vegetable beef soup.  I mixed in four drops of Da’Bomb with this and made it oh so good!
  • Mid-afternoon Snack – One apple with three tablespoons of natural peanut butter.
  • Supper (day 256) – Ham and steamed asparagus with cheese.  I also snacked on some peanuts.
  • Supper (day 257) – Two pork chops, steamed asparagus, and steamed broccoli.  I also snacked on some peanuts and ate a bowl of Grape Nuts (with 2% milk) for dessert.

Last night we went a saw Knowing.  I thought the movie was okay.  To me, there were a lot of places they made mistakes about how life was in the 1950′s, but what do I know, I wasn’t there.  As I said, the movie was okay, but the end was just plain weird.  You’ll have to go see it if you want to know more.

Thursday night I tried roasting more coffee beans.  Notice the word “tried”.    This time I did it on the gas grill, which apparently doesn’t get hot enough.  I ended up having to bring them inside and finishing on the stove and I burned them in the process.  That batch is in the trash.  I couldn’t be happy with ruining a batch, so I attempted it again on the charcoal grill.  These turned out great and I am enjoying a great cup right now.

I am heading out of town to Charlotte, NC next week.  This is going to be a challenge for me, as it always is.  This is one of the trips I go on where a lot of entertaining happens.   I am trying to prepare myself now to behave and only eat like I would if I were home, if not better.
