Motivation for Monday

Per Pippa’s very flattering comment, I decided to make my Toastmaster’s speech this week’s Motivation for Monday.  Be sure to adjust your sound.  Enjoy.

Saturday Update

The temperatures today have reached the 50s, which is much higher than I expected.  It is only supposed to get below freezing one time during the next week.  Much of the ice has now melted, so maybe clean up will become easier.  I went out and bought a good chain saw today, and I hope to begin cleaning my yard tomorrow.  I am also driving two hours tonight to pick up two natural gas heaters, which I hope to install early next week.  Even though I still won’t have power, it will allow us to be at home.  We have a gas hot water heater and a gas grill, so we can cook, take hot showers, and be warm after the heaters are installed.

Again, no real exercise today.  I hope to start that back tomorrow with the work in the yard.  Food choices have been pretty good so far, although I have probably overeaten a couple of times.  I don’t think there will be a weigh-in and measurement report this week.  It is just too difficult to get to my house and do that under these conditions.  Maybe next week.

Update from Ice Castle USA

By now I hope you have all figured out that my blog is going to be a little different for a short period of time.  I’ll still try to give updates on food, exercise, and my diet, but the updates will likely be very sporadic.  I was told yesterday that it will at least be two weeks but it may be four or more weeks before we have power.  Our home is not heated without electricity, so it is very cold right now.  Tonight we were fortunate enough to get a hotel room, so we will probably be at the hotel for a while.  Our yard is virtually destroyed.  The only good news is that it is supposed to be warmer and sunny this weekend, so perhaps we will thaw a bit.  If you are interested, here are a few pictures (click on them for larger pics):

As I think I said in my earlier post, I do have power and Internet at work, so I will try to update periodically from here.

Food is hard to get right now, but so far I have been able to stay on my diet.  I haven’t really been exercising, other than packing in wood for my mom and walking back and forth to our car (1/2 mile each way).  I will try to update my walking with some approximate totals later, but not tonight.  I have been eating a lot of apples, salad, and other vegetables.  I have also eaten several almonds.  I am not sure what we will do after this weekend.  We are running low on food and so are the stores, but I think the stores will restock this weekend.

I guess that is it for now.  I am not visiting any forums or blogs right now, so I’ll have to catch up on everything later.  I hope life is treating you all well.  I’ll try to have a more normal update next time.

Day 197 – A Devastating Day

Note: This was written on Tuesday, but I lost power right before I posted.  I’ll update again later, but just know it is bad, really, really bad.  My work has Internet though, so I may be able to update you periodically.

Well, was anticipated, the storm hit last night, and it was devastating.  I am not sure how much ice we received, but it seems like a lot to me.   My house is without power, so we are at my mother-in-law’s house, who has power and Internet.  That alone is unbelievable.  There is one local power company who states that the storm affected every one of their customers.  Our yard looks like a war zone.  We have a tremendous amount of branches that have fallen in our yard, on our house, and on our driveway.  There does not appear to be any structural damage yet, but I didn’t get a great look at the outside of the house.  We have a huge limb about 40 ft in the air dangling above our power line, which is not good.  There is going to be a lot of work to do.  Unfortunately, it is not over yet.  It has been lightly raining most of the afternoon, but the temperature is falling and it is expected to turn to freezing rain, then snow.  They are calling for another 3/4″ of ice and 3″ – 6″ of snow.  I cannot imagine how much worse things can get.  Almost every minute you can hear huge branches breaking out of the trees and falling to the ground.

There are few roads that are not blocked, including the Interstates and Parkways.  Most of the emergency crews are saying that they cannot clear the debris fast enough.  New debris is falling faster than they can clear it.  Believe it or not, the roads are actually not that bad as far as being slick.  I live relatively close to the Interstate, so I was able to get to work this morning.  Getting home was much harder though.  I do not think I will be able to make it in tomorrow.  There are some areas the authorities are ticketing people if caught driving on the roads.

This morning, my wife and I tried to go for a walk.  We probably walked a total of 1.6 miles, but we were convinced to turn around when branches started falling from trees all around us.  At first we thought we would try to trudge on, but then a huge branch fell about 100 feet in front of us, so we turned around.  I also did not do push ups, only because I forgot.  I will try to do them tomorrow.

I have taken several pictures, but not enough.  I am not on my computer tonight, so I will not be posting any pictures just yet.  It may be a few days, but I will be sure and post them.

Dieting has went good overall today, although I ate too much at lunch.  My South Beach Diet Meal Journal for the day is as follows:

  • Breakfast – A cup of Uncle Sam cereal with a cup of skim milk.
  • Mid-morning snack – One lf cheese stick.
  • Lunch – A very large bowl of homemade vegetable beef soup.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – An apple with two tablespoons of natural peanut butter.
  • Supper – One small sirloin steak, two chicken tenders, and a large salad with Ranch Dressing.
  • Mid-evening snack – Nothing.
  • Miscellaneous – Two cups of coffee.  I probably did not drink enough water today.

One problem I have become increasingly aware of lately is my crazy feeling that I have to finish a portion of leftovers if I feel it is going to go to waste.  That is why my bowl of soup was so large today.  I did not want to see the leftovers go to waste, so I ate too much of it to prevent that.  Crazy, I know.  I am really going to try to do better at this.

That is it for tonight.  I am going to try and visit some blogs while I can, but I anticipate we will lose power soon.  If you don’t hear from me for a few days, that is why.  They are saying some of us will not have power for a week.  I may be able to update my blog at work, but I try not to do this on their Internet.

Day 196 – Preparing for the Storm

Unfortunately, I have no exercise to report tonight.  I intended on getting a good walk in this morning, but I ended up staying up way too late last night and couldn’t make myself get out of bed.  I also don’t feel as if my arms are ready for another push up day yet, although I think I will be ready tomorrow.  The bad part about not walking today is that is may be the only good day to walk for the week. We are expecting a major winter storm tonight.  They are saying it has potential to be the worst in two decades.  IN my area they are calling for a couple of inches of ice, along with plenty of snow.  Do you know what that means?  It means that this may be my only time on the Internet for several days.  While I live in a subdivision, it is a rural subdivision, so we are usually one of the last places they fix the power when it is out.  I really, really hope that doesn’t happen, but if you notice a lack of posting for a few days, you know why.

I did really good on my diet today, and I think I am going to try to follow a similar pattern for the rest of the week.  My South Beach Diet Meal Journal for the day is as follows:

  • Breakfast – A cup of steel cut oats mixed with a serving of blueberries (sorry, I can’t remember how much a serving was), with a cup of ff, skim milk and one small turkey sausage.
  • Mid-morning snack -One lf cheese stick.
  • Lunch – A large salad with my homemade oil and vinegar dressing, and one pork chop.
  • Mid-afternoon snack – An apple with two tablespoons of natural peanut butter.
  • Supper – Three chicken strips and five chicken wings with hot sauce, and a large salad with Ranch Dressing.
  • Mid-evening snack – Nothing.
  • Miscellaneous – Two cups of coffee and a lot of water.

I gave blood today, so I tried to drink some extra water.  Other than it taking forever (the Red Cross was shorthanded), it went well.  They say giving blood burns about 650 calories, so at least I did that today.

As I am finishing writing this post, my family tells me the sleeting has started.  Maybe we will get lucky, but I am sensing a serious power outage here.  A guy at the hardware store tonight said he heard that The Weather Channel was sending their disaster team in here expecting the worst.  So if you see Paducah, KY on the news, think of me.

I am so ready for spring.

    Day 195

Another great exercise day.  I walked 5.24 miles.  I know I cannot get this in every day, so I am trying to do all I can when I have the time.

I also think I did pretty good on my food today.  Tonight I decided to vacuum seal the remainder of the peanuts I have been nick-nacking on.  This does two things for me:  1) it gets them out of my sight, and 2) it makes it harder to just stick my hand in and eat them.  I think this is going to pay off for me.  I am also going to make a conscious effort to not eat a snack in the evening for the next week.  Lastly, I am going to try to start drinking more water.  I feel like I drink enough, but maybe not.  I want to see if it makes a difference in my hunger feelings.

My South Beach Diet Meal Journal for the day is as follows:

    • Breakfast – One cup of steel cut oats (mixed with almond extract, 1/3 cup of pecans, a little butter, flax seed, and some Splenda) and one small turkey sausage.
    • Mid-morning snack – Nothing.
    • Lunch – One bowl of homemade vegetable beef soup.
    • Mid-afternoon snack – An apple with three tablespoons of natural peanut butter.
    • Supper – One pork chop with a large salad with ranch dressing.
    • Mid-evening snack -Nothing.
    • Miscellaneous – Two cups of coffee.  I usually don’t drink this on the weekend, but one of my sons begged for some today.
